Organelle protein changes in arbuscular mycorrhizal Medicago truncatula roots as deciphered by subcellular proteomics

2019

Prod 2020-8c SPE IPM INRA UB CNRS; The roots of most land plants can enter a symbiotic relationship with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) soil‐borne fungi belonging to the phylum Glomeromycota, which improves the mineral nutrition of the host plant. The fungus enters the root through the epidermis and grows into the cortex where it differentiates into a highly branched hyphal structure called the arbuscule. The role of the plant membrane system as the agent for cellular morphogenesis and signal/nutrient exchanges is especially accentuated during AM endosymbiosis. Notably, fungal hyphae are always surrounded by the host membrane, which is referred to as the perifungal membrane around intracellula…

How to reach optimal estimates of confidence intervals in microscopic counting of phytoplankton?

2021

Abstract Present practices in the microscopic counting of phytoplankton to estimate the reliability of results rely on the assumption of a random distribution of taxa in sample preparations. In contrast to that and in agreement with the literature, we show that aggregated distribution is common and can lead to over-optimistic confidence intervals, if estimated according to the shortcut procedure of Lund et al. based on the number of counted cells. We found a good linear correlation between the distribution independent confidence intervals for medians and those for parametric statistics so that 95% confidence intervals can be approximated by using a correction factor of 1.4. Instead, the rec…

X-ray response of CdZnTe detectors grown by the vertical Bridgman technique: Energy, temperature and high flux effects

2016

Abstract Nowadays, CdZnTe (CZT) is one of the key materials for the development of room temperature X-ray and gamma ray detectors and great efforts have been made on both the device and the crystal growth technologies. In this work, we present the results of spectroscopic investigations on new boron oxide encapsulated vertical Bridgman (B-VB) grown CZT detectors, recently developed at IMEM-CNR Parma, Italy. Several detectors, with the same electrode layout (gold electroless contacts) and different thicknesses (1 and 2.5 mm), were realized: the cathode is a planar electrode covering the detector surface (4.1×4.1 mm2), while the anode is a central electrode (2×2 mm2) surrounded by a guard-rin…

Digital fast pulse shape and height analysis on cadmium-zinc-telluride arrays for high-flux energy-resolved X-ray imaging.

2017

Cadmium-zinc-telluride (CZT) arrays with photon-counting and energy-resolving capabilities are widely proposed for next-generation X-ray imaging systems. This work presents the performance of a 2â...mm-thick CZT pixel detector, with pixel pitches of 500 and 250â...μm, dc coupled to a fast and low-noise ASIC (PIXIE ASIC), characterized only by the preamplifier stage. A custom 16-channel digital readout electronics was used, able to digitize and process continuously the signals from each output ASIC channel. The digital system performs on-line fast pulse shape and height analysis, with a low dead-time and reasonable energy resolution at both low and high fluxes. The spectroscopic response …

Informational and linguistic analysis of large genomic sequence collections via efficient Hadoop cluster algorithms

2018

Abstract Motivation Information theoretic and compositional/linguistic analysis of genomes have a central role in bioinformatics, even more so since the associated methodologies are becoming very valuable also for epigenomic and meta-genomic studies. The kernel of those methods is based on the collection of k-mer statistics, i.e. how many times each k-mer in {A,C,G,T}k occurs in a DNA sequence. Although this problem is computationally very simple and efficiently solvable on a conventional computer, the sheer amount of data available now in applications demands to resort to parallel and distributed computing. Indeed, those type of algorithms have been developed to collect k-mer statistics in…

Studies on the Effect of Cell Division-inhibiting Herbicides on Unialgal and Mixed Algal Cultures

1989

The effect of two cell division inhibiting herbicides on unialgal and mixed algal cultures was studied in laboratory tests. The herbicides studied were trifluralin (analytical grade) and the active ingredient as well as the preparation (80 % a.i.) of diphenamid. The three green algal species used were Selenastrum capricornutum PRINTZ, Scenedesmus quadricauda (TURP.) BREB., Oocystis parva W. et G. S. WEST. The response of algae to herbicides was determined by cell counting, and measured by turbidity (750 nm) and the 02-production of some of the treated cultures. The EC50-value (96 h) of trifluralin to Selenastrum capricornutum was 3.3 mg/l. There were differences in the sensitivity of the th…

Risk factors of oral candidosis: a twofold approach of study by fuzzy logic and traditional statistic.

2007

Abstract Objective To assess a panel of risk factors associated to oral candidosis (OC) onset and its chronic maintenance by means of fuzzy logic (FL) approach and statistical traditional methodology (STM); to investigate their casual relationship within a multifactorial framework. Design Case–control study. Setting One hospital-based clinic. Patients Eighty-nine patients with OC infection microbiologically diagnosed and 98 healthy subjects were consecutively recruited. Outcome measurements Anamnestic and clinical evaluations for OC, microbiological assessment (i.e. culture, CFU/mL counting and identification) were performed. The commonest predisposing factors for OC onset and its chronic s…

Frontal subregions mediating Elevator Counting task performance.

2010

Deficits in sustained attention may lead to action slips in everyday life as irrelevant action sequences are inappropriately triggered internally or by the environment. While deficits in sustained attention have been associated with damage to the frontal lobes of the brain, little is known about the role of the frontal lobes in the Elevator Counting subtest of the Test of Everyday Attention. In the current study, 55 frontal patients subdivided into medial, orbital and lateral subgroups, 18 patients with posterior lesions and 82 healthy controls performed the Elevator Counting task. The results revealed that patients with medial and left lateral prefrontal lesions were significantly impaired…

Establishing the 99th percentile for high sensitivity cardiac troponin i in healthy blood donors from southern italy

2019

Introduction: The knowledge of high sensitivity cardiac troponin I (hsTnI) distribution in a reference population is mandatory for its introduction in clinical practice. The aim of this study was to define the Upper Reference Limit (URL) of hsTnI measured by Single Molecule Counting technology (SMC) in an accurately selected reference population. Materials and methods: In the study 1140 blood donors were included and selected on the basis of medical history and biomarkers. High sensitivity cardiac troponin I was measured by SMC technology (Clarity, Singulex, Alamed, USA). The 99th percentile was calculated by the non-parametric method according to the Clinical and Laboratory Standard Instit…

Diabetes Interactive Diary: A New Telemedicine System Enabling Flexible Diet and Insulin Therapy While Improving Quality of Life

2009

OBJECTIVE Widespread use of carbohydrate counting is limited by its complex education. In this study we compared a Diabetes Interactive Diary (DID) with standard carbohydrate counting in terms of metabolic and weight control, time required for education, quality of life, and treatment satisfaction. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS Adults with type 1 diabetes were randomly assigned to DID (group A, n = 67) or standard education (group B, n = 63) and followed for 6 months. A subgroup also completed the SF-36 Health Survey (SF-36) and World Health Organization-Diabetes Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire (WHO-DTSQ) at each visit. RESULTS Of 130 patients (aged 35.7 ± 9.4 years; diabetes duration 1…
